Show of Defense Prowess; Erdogan Gifts NATO Leaders with Rifles

Reuters news agency reported that this gesture was intended to showcase the capabilities of the country's defense industry. According to Reuters, the gift included live ammunition, which drew significant attention.


Images released by the Lithuanian President's Office indicate that Erdogan's gift was likely a rare Gümüşay 357 Magnum revolver; a weapon produced in the 1990s by Turkey's MKE (Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation) military industries company. This revolver was presented in a wooden box featuring the Turkish flag, the NATO emblem, and a plaque titled "The First Revolver Produced in Turkey" in both Turkish and English.


Based on published statistics, Turkey ranked as the world's third-largest exporter of small arms between 2019 and 2024, with exports nearing three billion dollars, following the United States and Italy.


In recent years, Turkish arms manufacturers have expanded their presence in the European civilian firearms market by offering cheaper pistols and are now competing with established Italian and Belgian companies.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey, gifted an antique pistol complete with live ammunition to each of the participating leaders following the conclusion of the NATO summit in Ankara.
