Sources: Sayed Qasim Hashemi, Afghan journalist, detained

According to statements from Mr. Hashemi's family, the reason for his arrest was cited as lacking a valid residency visa; meanwhile, the process of extending visas for Afghan migrants in Pakistan has faced serious problems for over a year now, and the issuance of new visas for many Afghan citizens has effectively been halted.

Syed Qasim Hashemi is considered one of the well-known media figures in Afghanistan. In recent years, he has had extensive activities in various cultural and media sectors and has hosted the programs "Armaghan-e Sobh" and "Qesseh-ha-ye Zendegi" on Ayeneh TV. Additionally, he hosts programs for Awaz Media Group, is the owner of the Elham Media Group, and serves as the director of the free school for Afghan migrant children in Pakistan.

Mr. Hashemi left Afghanistan for Pakistan after the fall of the Afghan government in August 2021, due to security threats and concerns for his own life and that of his family.

The arrest of this Afghan journalist has sparked a wave of concern among journalists, human rights activists, and the Afghan migrant community in Pakistan. Many media activists view this incident as part of the escalating crisis facing Afghan migrants in Pakistan—migrants who, after fleeing security threats and extensive restrictions in Afghanistan, are now confronted with the dangers of arrest, imprisonment, and forced deportation.

Meanwhile, a number of journalists and organizations defending freedom of expression have called for clarification on the status of Syed Qasim Hashemi and for humane treatment of Afghan migrants in Pakistan.

Syed Qasim Hashemi, an Afghan journalist and media activist, was arrested by Pakistani police on Thursday morning en route to Ibbetabad, Islamabad, and transferred to prison. His family and relatives say that so far, no clear information is available regarding his health status, place of detention, or exact fate.
