Afghan asylum seeker confesses to murder after stabbing attack in London

According to the court report, Tajzai had scouted Shirzad's home and workplace prior to the attack. On March 27 of last year, after purchasing a knife in Leeds, he traveled to London and waited outside Shirzad's house in Westminster. When Shirzad arrived home, Tajzai attacked him with the knife, and he died near Westminster Abbey from multiple stab wounds.

Tajzai was arrested two days after the incident at his cousin's house in Leeds. Police seized items belonging to him during the house search, including a pair of bloodstained sneakers. The dispute between the two men was linked to Shirzad's romantic relationship with Tajzai's cousin's wife—a relationship that Shirzad himself confirmed, stating that he loved the woman.

Prior to the murder, Tajzai's cousin and his wife had reported Shirzad to Leeds police in September of last year, providing a photo of him and several messages. However, the woman later deleted the messages in a private conversation with police, refused to sign her formal statement, and left the station. On October 3, police visited the couple's home and found Shirzad sitting on the floor, his hands bound with a cloth and barefoot. He was arrested on suspicion of stalking and unlawful entry with intent to commit a sexual offense; but he told police that he was in a romantic relationship with the woman and had traveled to Leeds after she invited him via Snapchat.

After Shirzad's release, Tajzai's cousin and his wife contacted police several more times; but they were later told that no further action would be taken against him. Wayne Julley, the senior Metropolitan Police investigator in charge of the case, said after Tajzai's confession that it was a "devastating" case in which a young man had lost his life as a result of a violent, brutal, and senseless act. He added that no family should have to endure the pain of losing a loved one under such circumstances.

Sulaiman Tajzai, an 18-year-old Afghan refugee in Britain, confessed in Old Bailey court on Friday to the murder of 26-year-old Faramarz Shirzad. London's Metropolitan Police announced that Tajzai has also admitted to the charge of unlawfully carrying a bladed weapon, and the court is scheduled to decide on his sentence on September 27.
