UN: Drinking water crisis in Afghanistan threatens millions

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme announced on Sunday, 22 Sharival (September 12), via the social media platform X that protecting water resources, improving sanitation conditions, and building healthier communities in Afghanistan require proper urban planning, effective water resource management, and appropriate waste management systems. The agency has stressed the urgent need to address these issues seriously to combat the water crisis in the country.

Afghanistan has faced severe drought and the impacts of climate change in recent years. Previous reports from United Nations humanitarian agencies indicate that reduced precipitation, a significant drop in groundwater levels, and a shortage of standard urban infrastructure have left millions of families in urban and rural areas grappling with acute water shortages.

In addition to drought, poor management of urban waste and sewage has become another major threat to water resources. Pollution of limited groundwater sources, particularly in densely populated cities like Kabul, has made access to clean water even more challenging and heightened concerns about the health consequences of this crisis.

International organizations have previously warned that using contaminated water can increase the risk of infectious diseases, including cholera, and gastrointestinal issues—a danger that particularly threatens children and vulnerable families. Accordingly, expanding access to safe water, protecting existing resources, and improving water and wastewater management systems have been identified as fundamental needs for Afghanistan.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme has warned that millions of people in Afghanistan, despite the vital importance of water for life and health, still lack access to safe and reliable drinking water. This agency has emphasized that greater efforts and actions must be undertaken to ensure universal access to drinking water across the country.
