Funeral ceremony ends; Ali Khamenei finally buried in Mashhad

Khamenei's burial ceremony took place 131 days after his death. His funeral processions were held in Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala, and finally Mashhad.


Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Ali Khamenei, who has been introduced as the leader of the Islamic Republic following his father's death, was absent from none of the funeral processions or burial ceremonies. This absence has fueled speculation about whether he is alive or in critical physical condition.


Previously, some media outlets had reported that Mojtaba Khamenei, on the advice of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, would not participate in any ceremonies related to his father.

Ali Khamenei, the former leader of the Islamic Republic, was laid to rest in the early hours of Friday at the shrine of the eighth Shia Imam in the city of Mashhad. Prior to the burial ceremony, Mostafa Khamenei, his eldest son, performed the funeral prayer over his father's body.
