Former Italian Foreign Minister: Withdrawal from Afghanistan left a "huge wound" for Afghan women

Tremonti, on Friday, August 30, commented in a note on the social network X in response to a post by Francesco Maria Talò, Italy's special envoy for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, regarding the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan.

He emphasized that such a withdrawal, with its far-reaching consequences for Afghan society and particularly for women, should never have been allowed to happen.

The former Italian Foreign Minister, who held the position from 2011 to 2014, said that developments in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of international forces have further highlighted the humanitarian and civic importance of the international community's mission; a mission that, according to him, was focused on establishing peace and security, development, and support for human rights.

This 80-year-old politician also recalled the two-decade efforts of Italy and dozens of allied countries in Afghanistan, stating that despite bearing heavy costs and sacrifices, these countries fostered a generation of hope for freedom and human dignity among Afghan women and men; a generation that, in his view, still harbors this "inextinguishable flame."

Meanwhile, Francesco Maria Talò has also called the withdrawal of the United States and NATO from Afghanistan an incorrect decision. He emphasized that the future of this country depends on the resilience, education, and continued efforts of Afghan girls and teachers to pursue knowledge.

Julio Tremonti, former Italian Foreign Minister, has described the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan as a "disastrous" decision and stated that this event has had devastating consequences for the people of Afghanistan, especially women. According to him, the presence of the international community in Afghanistan had created an environment in which millions of women could access education, work, and greater rights and freedoms, and remain safe from the danger of child marriage
