The head of the Norwegian Refugee Council, referring to the withdrawal of NATO forces in 2021, said that member countries of this alliance promised when leaving Afghanistan that they would not forget the people of this country. However, he stated that the current situation shows that these promises have been forgotten and the people of Afghanistan have been completely ignored.


According to statistics from the World Food Programme, the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan remains widespread in 2026, with 17.4 million people in need of urgent food assistance. It is also projected that this year, 4.9 million women and children will face malnutrition. This organization has stated that 12 provinces of the country are facing critical levels of acute child malnutrition, the highest figure recorded to date.


The reduction in humanitarian aid, poverty and unemployment, drought, and the widespread return of refugees are considered the main factors exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. Egeland, in light of this situation, has emphasized that the gap between people's needs and available support has widened, and the living conditions of millions of Afghan citizens continue to become more difficult.



Jan Egeland, head of the Norwegian Refugee Council, has stated after a trip to Afghanistan that, despite a relative improvement in the security situation, the living conditions of the people and their access to basic rights continue to deteriorate. He said that in his recent meetings, he once again witnessed the worsening situation of the people and met with mothers who had no food for their children.
