Pakistan as mediator; Asim Munir heads to Iran to ease tensions between Tehran and Washington

According to Iranian media, the main focus of this trip will be consultations with officials of the Islamic Republic regarding the reduction of tensions between Tehran and Washington.


The Iranian news agency IRNA has announced that this trip is a continuation of Islamabad's efforts to mediate between Iran and the United States, and Asim Munir is scheduled to meet and hold discussions with Iranian officials about the progress of peace talks between the two countries.


Meanwhile, Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan's Interior Minister, also arrived in Tehran on Wednesday for the second time in the past week. During his previous trip on Saturday, he had met with Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of Iran, Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Minister, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of Parliament, and Eskandar Momeni, the Interior Minister of the Islamic Republic. According to media reports, the main focus of these meetings was the resumption of peace negotiations between Tehran and Washington.


In recent months, Pakistan has sought to play an active role in bringing Iran and the United States closer together. The first round of talks between the two sides was held in Islamabad on April 11, but it concluded without achieving any specific results.


Asim Munir had previously traveled to Tehran at the head of a high-level delegation on April 15 to consult on the mediation process and peace talks between Iran and the United States. Media reports indicate that the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan has played a significant role in this process.


Despite the publication of these reports, the Pakistani army has not yet officially commented on Asim Munir's latest trip, and no further details about his schedule and meetings have been released.

Media outlets close to the Islamic Republic have reported that Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, will travel to Tehran on Thursday, May 21.
