Former US Ambassador: Neglecting Afghanistan could threaten US security

Crocker emphasized that Afghanistan is not facing only an internal crisis and that developments in the country are linked to regional and global security. He called for continued engagement with Afghanistan and support for Afghan citizens working in areas such as human rights, education, free media, and civil society.

This former U.S. diplomat also criticized the Taliban’s performance over the past five years, saying the group has sought to return Afghanistan to an “age of darkness.” According to him, the Taliban’s efforts to reshape society and establish an order based on “the subjugation of women and dominance of men” and the rule of an unelected emir through “arbitrary” decrees are concerning.

Despite describing Afghanistan’s current situation as a “dark time,” Crocker called the people of the country the most important hope for the future. He said today’s Afghanistan is different from 2001, as a larger educated population has grown and many people are familiar with concepts like political participation, civil society, and free and independent media. He added that the Taliban cannot extinguish this spirit.

Crocker also recalled his memories from the early years after the fall of the Taliban’s first regime, saying that when he went to Kabul to reopen the U.S. embassy, Afghanistan had been widely devastated. At this event, a number of former U.S. diplomats, civil society activists, journalists, and Afghan political figures in the U.S. discussed the situation of women and girls, human rights restrictions, independent media, and Afghanistan’s political future.

Ryan Crocker, the former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, has warned that Washington’s continued neglect of developments in Afghanistan could have negative consequences for U.S. national security and the world. He stated on Tuesday at an event at the National Endowment for Democracy that the experience of the 1990s showed that ignoring Afghanistan can be costly for U.S. security.
