Russia criticizes US plan to halt Iran's nuclear program for 20 years

This Russian official wrote in a message on the social network X on Saturday that it is unclear why the U.S. insists on a 20-year halt and not other timeframes such as 15 or 25 years. He also described Washington's stance as based on ideological views and warned that if this approach fails, the U.S. should not blame others.


The U.S. President had previously stated that he agrees with a 20-year suspension of Iran's nuclear program; however, he emphasized that this commitment must be genuine and reliable. He said that a temporary halt to activities or short-term restrictions would not suffice for Washington.


The U.S. President, on Friday after leaving China's capital and aboard the presidential plane, responded to a question about Iran's recent proposal by saying that if the first part of this proposal does not align with his wishes, he will not consider continuing it.


He also stated that Iran should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons and added that if Tehran seeks any program with military potential, Washington will not accept it.


Regarding the time limitation, the U.S. President also said that he means a genuine and complete halt for 20 years, not a situation that only involves a temporary reduction in production or the end of fuel stockpiles. According to him, the U.S. seeks to achieve a comprehensive and complete agreement.

Russia's representative to international organizations has criticized the U.S. President's proposal for a 20-year suspension of Iran's nuclear program, deeming it lacking in clear logic.
