UN and Amnesty International call for investigation into Dasht-e Barchi explosion

On Tuesday, UNAMA expressed condolences to the injured children and their families, emphasizing that schools and educational centers must be safe places for children. UNICEF has also voiced concern over the injury of dozens of children and stressed the need to protect children's lives, dignity, and rights.


Amnesty International has called for an independent investigation in line with international standards and stated that those responsible for the incident must be held accountable following a fair judicial process. The organization has also underscored the Taliban's responsibility to protect civilians, particularly ethnic and religious minorities.


Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Taliban, had previously told media outlets that the explosion was likely carried out by ISIS or "affiliated circles." He added that investigations into the incident are ongoing and that Taliban security forces are working to identify and apprehend those responsible.


No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion so far.


Dasht-e Barchi, a predominantly Hazara neighborhood in west Kabul, has been repeatedly targeted by deadly attacks in recent years. Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, the European Union, and several other international organizations have previously called for the protection of civilians and an investigation into this incident.

The United Nations and Amnesty International have called for a thorough, independent, and impartial investigation into the Monday evening explosion at an educational center in Kabul's Dasht-e Barchi neighborhood. According to UNAMA, at least 42 children aged 9 to 14 were injured in the blast.
