Sources: Taliban capture several more women and girls in Herat

One witness said that around 11 a.m. on Sunday, Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue agents detained a 13-year-old girl who had just left a course near the Taliban Ministry of Information and Culture. She was asking people for help as she was being transferred to the vehicle. After protests from a number of shopkeepers, the agents beat one of the protesters with an electric baton and then took the girl away with them.

In another incident on the same day, according to a witness, two Taliban vehicles in the Rangina Bridge area forcibly loaded several women and girls who had prayer shawls and masks onto the vehicles. One of the women had two children with her, and the children were crying as their mother was detained. This witness added that near Sufiabad as well, two veiled women forcibly took a young girl with them despite her having a mask and prayer shawl.

Another source said on Monday that two Taliban vehicles transferred a girl from the alley known as the Khwaja Amini Bathhouse. According to him, this girl had a hijab, manteau, and mask, and also had a backpack with her. The witness estimated her age to be under 20 years and likened the agents' treatment of her to the arrest of someone accused of theft.

The wave of women's arrests in Herat has intensified since June 5. Khalid Hanafi, the Taliban Minister for the Promotion of Virtue, had previously said that those detained were individuals who, in his claim, were involved in "promoting unveiledness, creating unrest, and disseminating negative content" against this ministry.

Local sources in Herat say that Taliban Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue enforcers detained a number of women and girls, including a 13-year-old girl, in three separate incidents and took them away with them. According to witnesses to the incidents, some of the detainees had chadors and masks on their heads and faces at the time of arrest.
