Zahir Qadir appears in US court after being extradited from Kenya

He faces charges of drug trafficking and weapons possession, and if convicted, he could face a sentence ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment.


Qadir, who was arrested in Nairobi on April 14, 2025, was handed over to the United States after Kenya's Supreme Court upheld the extradition order. U.S. officials have stated that he will remain in custody pending the continuation of the judicial process.


U.S. prosecutors have accused him of leading an international network for drug and weapons trafficking. According to them, Qadir sold two kilograms of narcotics to an individual during a sting operation who was actually cooperating with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.


It is also alleged that this network played a role in trafficking weaponry, including heavy machine guns and RPG launchers.


Nevertheless, Abdul Zahir Qadir has denied all charges, stating that he has no criminal record and operates as a law-abiding citizen.


The Taliban had previously announced that it had seriously reviewed this case and would take necessary actions if required.

The United States Department of Justice announced that Abdul Zahir Qadir, former deputy of the Afghan parliament, has been transferred to the United States following extradition from Kenya and has appeared in federal court in Manhattan.
