Forced return; Germany announces expansion of deportation of Afghan refugees

The Interior Ministry of the German state of Hesse has announced that the groundwork has been laid for increasing the deportation of Afghan refugees. Previously, repatriations to Afghanistan were largely limited to criminals and those identified as security threats.


Roman Poseck, the Interior Minister of Hesse, has stated that women are not included in this process, and individuals subject to deportation must be male, adult, single, and in possession of a final order to leave Germany.


These individuals will be introduced to Taliban representatives prior to deportation. German officials say that introducing these individuals to Taliban representatives is solely for identity verification and obtaining travel documents if needed.


Germany's decision to cooperate with the Taliban in the deportation process has faced critical backlash. Some refugee rights advocacy organizations have warned that expanding deportations of Afghan citizens without criminal records could have human rights implications.


At the same time, German officials have emphasized increasing the deportation process. Alexander Dobrindt, Germany's Interior Minister, has said that repatriations to countries like Afghanistan must increase, and officials in Hesse and Bavaria have also stressed that those without residency rights or whose asylum applications have been rejected must leave Germany.


The Hesse Refugee Council and a number of opposition politicians have expressed concern over the normalization of deportations to Afghanistan. They say this action may conflict with human rights principles and international obligations regarding the protection of refugees.

The German government is expanding the process of repatriating Afghan refugees whose asylum applications have been rejected. This decision includes a group of adult single men who have received final deportation orders.
