Taliban Border Minister: Durand Line Will Never Be Recognized

According to reports from Taliban-affiliated media, Noorullah Noori made these remarks at a public gathering in Takhar province and urged the people to work toward strengthening the Taliban regime. He said: “The people of Afghanistan stand firm against any difficulties and are prepared to make any sacrifice to defend their homeland.”


Noori went on to stress that the Durand Line is “a line that has been drawn across our chest” and added: “Pakistan is determined to make the Durand Line official, but it is certainly not and will never be an official border.”


The Taliban border minister’s remarks come as Mohammad Mohaqeq, leader of Afghanistan’s Islamic Unity Party, recently stated that he recognizes the Durand Line as the international border between Afghanistan and Pakistan—a position that has sparked widespread reactions among political figures.


Noorullah Noori has previously taken a hardline stance against Pakistan, warning that if tensions continue, the Taliban have the capability to target cities such as Islamabad and Lahore.


These statements were made amid escalating verbal tensions over the Durand Line among officials from the former government, the Taliban, and several activists, and so far, the Pakistani government and the Taliban administration have been unable to resolve the ongoing crises between the two countries.


Pakistan claims that the Taliban have harbored terrorist groups in Afghan soil, particularly the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan; a claim that the Taliban have repeatedly denied.

Noorullah Noori, the Taliban’s Minister of Borders, Tribes, and Ethnicities, emphasized that Pakistan does not want a stable government to form in Afghanistan and is working to have “the Durand Line recognized as an official border.” He added that the Taliban do not seek war; however, if it is imposed, they will defend their country’s soil.
