Aisha Wahab: America should have diplomatic relations with the Taliban

Wahab expressed hope that establishing formal relations between the United States and the Taliban administration could compel the group to respect human rights and improve the situation for women. At the same time, she described Afghanistan's current situation as "disheartening" and warned of the consequences of continued deprivation of women and children from education and normal life, calling it "catastrophic" in the future.

This U.S. Congresswoman also called for greater utilization of Afghanistan's economic potential, particularly its mining resources. According to her, the United States should at least cooperate in various sectors for partnerships and contracts with Afghanistan; because Afghanistan needs more allies, and so far, existing capacities have not been properly utilized.

In another part of this interview, Wahab also criticized the Taliban's opponents and warlord groups, calling them "failed and misguided." She said that some of these groups are pursuing their personal interests instead of Afghanistan's interests and claimed that even during the period of U.S. support, some of them were involved in destroying the country, committing assaults, and plundering.

Ayesha Wahab, who is 39 years old and was born in New York, was a California state legislator before being elected to Congress. She won a special election in California's 14th congressional district and became the first Afghan-American woman in the U.S. House of Representatives. Wahab has stated that Afghanistan's problems are not limited to the Taliban.

Ayesha Wahab, the first Afghan-American woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress, has stated that Washington should maintain its diplomatic relations with Afghanistan regardless of which group is governing the country. She emphasized during an interview with the media outlet "Democracy Now" on Monday, September 2, that the United States must pursue the path of diplomacy and remain engaged with Afghanistan.
