Afghanistan advances to semi-finals of U-19 Cricket World Cup with historic win over Ireland

In this one-day match, Afghanistan's young players crushed their European rivals by a staggering margin of 191 runs—a win that marked the first time Afghanistan advanced to the top four teams in the tournament.


Afghanistan's players, who batted first, put on a disciplined and calculated performance to set a challenging total of 315 runs. This heavy target put immense pressure on Ireland, who were unable to mount an adequate response.


In pursuit of the target, Ireland collapsed in an unprecedented manner, with five of their players dismissed for a combined total of just 53 runs.


In the bowling department, Abdul Aziz Khan and Aqeel Khan played pivotal roles in the victory, each claiming three wickets to dismantle the backbone of the opposition.


The Afghanistan Under-19 cricket team lineup for this match included Mohib Khan (captain), Faisal Shinwari, Usman Khan Sadat, Khalid Ahmadzai, Aziz Khan, Azizullah Miahkhil, Abdul Aziz Khan, Wahid Zadran, Rohullah Arab, Aqeel Khan, and Nasrat Nuristani.


Afghanistan had previously lost their first Super Sixes match against Sri Lanka, but this commanding win propelled them into the semifinals as the second-placed team from Group A.


On the other side, Ireland, with just one win against Japan, finished at the bottom of their group and were eliminated from the competition.


In the group standings, Australia tops the table with the most points, while Sri Lanka, despite tying on points with Afghanistan, sits in third place due to a lower net run rate.


The 2024 Under-19 Cricket World Cup is being hosted by Zimbabwe.
