According to judicial documents, the accused told police officers that he intended to kill Muslims. Police stated that Peter Michael Larsen poses a serious threat to public safety if released, due to his violent behavior, extremist beliefs, and prior planning for a mass killing.

The attack occurred on Monday at a shopping center, where the victim, an employee at a store, was severely wounded from multiple stab wounds to various parts of his body. Bystanders at the scene also managed to subdue the attacker before police arrived. He now faces charges of attempted murder and carrying a prohibited dangerous weapon.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported, quoting Shuayb Din, imam of the Utah Islamic Center, that the attacker first asked the victim for his name and religion, then requested a bottle of water from him. According to him, when the victim returned with the water, the attacker assaulted him with a knife. Friends of the Muslim citizen have also launched a page on the GoFundMe website, stating that he was stabbed at least 15 times.

Human rights advocates in the U.S. have warned that over the past two decades since the September 11, 2001 attacks, violence stemming from Islamophobia has increased in various cities across the country. These organizations cite anti-immigrant policies, the strengthening of white supremacist movements, and the repercussions of the Gaza war as factors exacerbating this trend. They point to the murder of a six-year-old Muslim child in Illinois in 2023 and the 2026 shooting at a mosque in San Diego that left five dead as examples of such attacks.

Police in the U.S. state of Utah announced that they had arrested a man on charges of stabbing a Muslim citizen. According to court documents released on Tuesday, the accused confessed to targeting the victim because of his Muslim faith and intending to kill him. The Muslim citizen is hospitalized with severe injuries and has undergone multiple surgeries so far.
