Afghanistan's embassy in Tokyo closed after Taliban refused to hand over embassy

Shida Mohammad Abadali, the ambassador appointed by Afghanistan's former government in Japan, announced the news, stating that she had left Tokyo with deep sorrow.


She emphasized that it had been an honor for her to keep the national flag of Afghanistan raised atop the embassy building until the very last moment.


This diplomatic mission had been operating under the ambassador and staff affiliated with Afghanistan's former government until now; however, it was recently decided, in coordination with Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to halt its activities.


According to the official announcement from the Embassy of Afghanistan in Tokyo, effective January 31, all political, economic, cultural, and consular affairs of this institution are suspended indefinitely.


Afghanistan's former ambassador to Japan expressed hope that the national flag would remain at the embassy site until a legitimate representative of the Afghan people is appointed.


Following the change of power in Afghanistan, a number of ambassadors and diplomats from the former government have refrained from cooperating with the Taliban or handing over diplomatic missions to the Taliban.


Japan is among the countries that, while maintaining limited engagement with the Taliban, has continued its humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, and its embassy in Kabul remains operational. Nevertheless, the Japanese government has not recognized the Taliban administration to date and has not handed over the Embassy of Afghanistan in Tokyo to this group.

The Embassy of Afghanistan in Japan's capital officially closed on Saturday, 11 Dalwa (February).
