Reuters: US military prepares for possible weeks-long operation against Iran

Last week, U.S. and Iranian diplomats met in Oman to once again discuss Tehran’s nuclear program. These talks took place after Trump increased the U.S. military presence in the region, heightening concerns about the possibility of new military action.


U.S. officials have said that the Pentagon is deploying another aircraft carrier to the Middle East and sending thousands of additional troops, fighter jets, missile-equipped destroyers, and other military equipment to the region; equipment capable of both offensive and defensive operations.


Meanwhile, Trump said during a speech at a military base in North Carolina on Friday that “reaching an agreement with Iran has been difficult.” He added: “Sometimes there has to be fear. That’s the only thing that can resolve the situation.”


White House spokesperson Anna Kelly, in response to a question about this military buildup, said that Trump “has all options on the table with regard to Iran” and will ultimately make a decision that benefits U.S. national security.


It is worth noting that the United States attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities last June using stealth bombers. In response, Iran carried out a limited retaliatory strike against a U.S. base in Qatar.

Reuters news agency, citing two U.S. officials, reported that the U.S. military is preparing for the possibility of conducting long-term military operations, potentially lasting several weeks, against Iran; should Donald Trump order an attack.
