Nabil: Taliban diplomacy is like a dual-SIM mobile phone

By posting a photo of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar’s meeting with Mike Pompeo, the former U.S. Secretary of State, as well as a picture of Qal Hassan, the Taliban’s ambassador in Moscow, standing beside Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, he wrote: "This scene looks more like a dual-SIM phone than a diplomatic one."


Nabil did not provide further explanation in this note regarding the details or implications of the Taliban’s relations with the U.S. and Russia.


The image of Abdul Ghani Baradar’s meeting with Mike Pompeo dates back to the 2020 negotiations in Doha; discussions that paved the way for the agreement on the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan.


On the other hand, Qal Hassan, the Taliban’s ambassador in Moscow, presented his credentials to Vladimir Putin on Thursday—an action that indicates the level of relations between the Taliban and Russia. Following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, Washington has continued its limited engagement with the Taliban primarily in the areas of freeing American hostages and exchanging information related to counterterrorism efforts.


Russia is currently the only country that has formally recognized the Taliban administration and established close relations with this group.

Rahmatullah Nabil, the former head of Afghanistan's National Security, has sarcastically described the Taliban’s diplomatic approach as a "dual-SIM phone" by sharing images of Taliban officials alongside senior U.S. and Russian officials.
