Iranian football figures call on FIFA to suspend the country's football federation

The letter states that, based on FIFA's principles and regulations, respect for human dignity and the defense of individuals' fundamental rights are among the non-negotiable values of this global institution; meanwhile, according to the signatories, at least six members of the football community have lost their lives during the recent protests in Iran.


The signatories have also warned that one player from Sepahan Club is facing the risk of a death sentence for participating in peaceful protests, and several other footballers have been arrested, summoned, and interrogated for expressing their personal views.


The letter further emphasizes that the resumption of the Iranian Football Federation's activities to normal status must be conditional on providing credible guarantees—guarantees under which football activists will no longer face threats, pursuit, arrest, or severe punishments for expressing peaceful opinions.


Ali Karimi, Mohammad Taghva, Sosha Mekan, Bakhtiar Rahmani, Milad Zanjadpour, Alireza Marzbani, and Mohammadreza Faghani are among the figures who have signed this letter. The letter has also been sent to all FIFA member federations.

A number of Iranian football players, referees, and sports journalists have sent an official letter to the Secretary General of FIFA, the International Football Federation, demanding a clear response from this body regarding the widespread violation of human rights in Iran and the suspension of activities of this country's football federation.
