MEP: Brussels meeting is a step towards normalizing relations with the Taliban

Neumann said on Tuesday that the European Commission claims the discussions with the Taliban are solely about the return of individuals convicted of charges such as terrorism, murder, or rape. However, she pointed to reports from Germany indicating that officials in that country are preparing procedures to deport Afghan citizens who have no criminal convictions.

This Member of the European Parliament also expressed concern about the possibility of entrusting Afghanistan's consular services in European countries to the Taliban. She said the Taliban have declared that the continuation of the repatriation process for refugees depends on the activation of consular services, and she urged the European Commission to clarify whether this process will lead to handing over Afghanistan's consular services in Europe to the Taliban or not.

The Taliban's Foreign Ministry had previously announced that the negotiations between its delegation and European Union officials in Brussels focused on resuming consular services for Afghan citizens residing in Europe, expanding relations with European countries, and reviewing the status of refugees whose asylum claims have been rejected.

Neumann has warned that entrusting consular services to the Taliban is not solely about repatriating migrants but could impact the lives of thousands of Afghan citizens residing in Europe.

She has asked the European Commission to explain the individuals subject to return, the protection of refugees against what she calls "transnational repression," and the concessions the Taliban receive in exchange for this cooperation.

Hanna Neumann, a Member of the European Parliament, has criticized the recent meeting between European Union officials and Taliban representatives in Brussels, stating that this gathering cannot simply be dismissed as mere "technical engagement." In her view, the action could pave the way for the political normalization of relations with the Taliban without holding the group accountable.
