Amnesty International calls for an end to impunity for Iranian officials

According to this report, officials of the Islamic Republic have deliberately resorted to the widespread killing of protesters—protesters who demand fundamental change and a transition from the Islamic Republic system to a new system that respects the human rights and human dignity of the people.


The organization has urged UN member states to acknowledge the fact that structural and ongoing impunity for the crimes committed by security forces during the current protests has emboldened Iranian officials to continue their criminal behavior.


According to the official report, the escalating crackdown on the protests has led to the deaths of more than 2,000 people since December 28.


Agnes Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, said:

“This cycle of bloodshed and impunity must end. Even given the dark history of Iranian officials in committing flagrant human rights violations and crimes under international law across successive waves of protests, the scale and extent of the killings in the recent protests, coinciding with a nationwide internet blackout since January 8, is unprecedented.”


The organization has called on UN member states to immediately and in a coordinated manner take action to deter further bloodshed, including by holding special sessions at the UN Human Rights Council and the Security Council.


Member states must also prioritize the establishment of international justice mechanisms aimed at pursuing prompt criminal investigations and prosecution of those who have committed crimes under international law and flagrant human rights violations. Governments should also urge the Security Council to refer the situation in Iran to the International Criminal Court.

Amnesty International stated in a press release that the killing of protesters requires urgent and coordinated global diplomatic action to end the impunity of Iranian officials.
