Israel bulldozes UNRWA buildings in East Jerusalem

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) also stated that Israeli forces have seized staff devices and expelled them from their headquarters in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. The agency added that this action constitutes a "flagrant violation of the immunities and privileges of the United Nations."


These demolitions are taking place as Israel intensifies pressure on nongovernmental organizations providing humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza.


The Palestinian Authority based in Ramallah condemned these demolitions and stated that it "warns of the dangerous implications of this deliberate escalation against UNRWA; an action carried out within the framework of the systematic targeting of UNRWA's international role and mission, and an effort to undermine the international support system for Palestinian refugees."


Meanwhile, in a second targeting of a United Nations-affiliated facility in East Jerusalem under Israeli control, Israeli forces fired tear gas toward a Palestinian technical school.


Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNRWA, said these attacks "have been carried out by Israeli authorities to erase the Palestinian refugee identity."


He also warned that "what is happening to UNRWA today could happen tomorrow to any other international organization or diplomatic mission anywhere in the world."


At the same time, Israel has repeatedly accused UNRWA of what it calls "pro-Palestinian biases" and, without providing evidence, accused the agency of ties to Hamas—accusations that UNRWA has strongly denied.


Israel's Foreign Ministry stated that these demolitions were carried out in accordance with a new law that prohibits the activities of this organization.

UNRWA announced on Tuesday, January 20, in a statement that Israel has proceeded to demolish buildings inside the premises of this organization in occupied East Jerusalem.
