British envoy calls Taliban's arrest of journalists worrying, calls for transparency

Richard Lennix, in a post on the social network X, stated that reports of violent treatment of journalists and the confiscation of their belongings are concerning and must be seriously investigated. He emphasized that journalists should be able to continue their professional activities without fear or threat.


In recent months, media support organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over the increasing pressure on journalists, work restrictions, and detentions in Afghanistan.


In the latest incident, Taliban intelligence forces detained three journalists, including Mansour Niazi and Emran Danesh from TOLOnews television, as well as Javed Niazi, the editor-in-chief of a local media outlet.


The Taliban's Ministry of Information and Culture confirmed the detention of the two TOLOnews journalists last week, stating that their case is under review and no judicial decision has been made thus far. However, details of the charges have not been announced.


The detention of these journalists has drawn reactions from international organizations. Amnesty International has described this action as part of a broader pattern of pressure and retaliation against journalists and media workers in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

The British representative on Afghan affairs has called on the Taliban to provide clarification regarding the detention of three journalists without presenting specific charges and to adhere to legal procedures.
