US: We are ready to take necessary steps to return Mahmoud Shah Habibi

Dan Brown, the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires for Afghanistan, wrote in Persian and Pashto on his X account on Tuesday, August 20, that four years have passed since Habibi's disappearance. He said the United States has set a reward of up to five million dollars for information that could lead to identifying his place of detention, locating him, and securing his return.


Brown stressed that there is no reason for Habibi's case to remain unresolved, and Washington is prepared to take "necessary actions" to resolve this matter.


These remarks came just hours after the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) accused the Taliban of abducting Mahmoud Shah Habibi. In a statement, the agency said that in August 2022, the Taliban's intelligence agency pulled Habibi and his driver out of their vehicle and detained them along with 29 other employees of the telecommunications company "Asia Consulting Group" in Kabul.


According to FBI information, most of those detained were later released; however, Habibi and one other employee remain missing. The agency stated that the Taliban has not yet provided any information about Habibi's fate or place of detention.


Mahmoud Shah Habibi stayed in the country after the fall of the previous Afghan government and was working for "Asia Consulting Group" in Kabul. He had traveled outside Afghanistan three months before his disappearance and vanished four days after returning to Kabul.


Habibi's family believes he is being held in a Taliban prison; however, the Taliban has denied this claim, stating that Mahmoud Shah Habibi is not in their custody.


Reports have also emerged regarding the reason for his disappearance. It is said that the Taliban accused Mr. Habibi of collaborating with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to identify the hiding place of Ayman al-Zawahiri, the former leader of al-Qaeda. Zawahiri was killed in a U.S. airstrike in Kabul's Wazir Akbar Khan area just days before Habibi's disappearance.

Four years after the disappearance of Mahmoud Shah Habibi, an Afghan-American citizen and former head of Afghanistan's Civil Aviation Authority, U.S. officials once again emphasized Washington's efforts to clarify his fate and bring him back home.
