Zalmay Khalilzad's trip to Kabul; Talks with Taliban in shadow of mission ambiguity

According to this announcement, Khalilzad, who in the past had also traveled to Afghanistan alongside U.S. officials to pursue the issue of freeing American prisoners, has held discussions with Taliban officials this time as well.


During this meeting, Amir Khan Muttaqi stated that following the withdrawal of foreign forces and the end of the war in Afghanistan, relations and contacts between the Taliban and the United States have entered a new phase.


According to him, opportunities exist in various sectors for developing relations between the two sides, which can be pursued through continuous dialogue.


The Taliban Ministry of Foreign Affairs' press release states that Zalmay Khalilzad expressed satisfaction with what it called the "improvement in the security situation and the reconstruction process in Afghanistan."


Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether Khalilzad's trip to Kabul was conducted within the framework of an official mission or had a personal aspect.

The Taliban Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. diplomat, arrived in Kabul on Sunday, January 7, and met with Amir Khan Muttaqi.
