Hamid Karzai: Conditions for recognizing Taliban offices have not yet been presented

Mr. Karzai stated in an interview with Bloomberg on Friday, August 30, that the international community and the United Nations have repeatedly asked the Taliban to lift the restrictions imposed on women and girls. He emphasized that this demand is not his personal view and has also been repeatedly raised by the international community and the United Nations.

The former president of Afghanistan also said that despite the ban on girls continuing their education beyond the sixth grade and the extensive restrictions on women's employment, he has no intention of sending his daughters abroad to continue their education.

He explained that as an Afghan citizen, he feels obligated to work toward creating opportunities for girls' education within the country. According to Karzai, sending his daughters abroad for further studies would mean accepting the status quo, and he will not make such a decision.

Regarding the start of the normalization process with the Taliban under current conditions, he said he supports a process in which Afghan citizens themselves come together and reach a common solution about the country's future—a future in which all Afghan citizens feel a sense of participation and belonging, and their rights are guaranteed.

In Karzai's view, the ultimate goal should be to build an Afghanistan where all Afghan citizens can live and have the opportunity to strive, work, and progress to build their future within the country.

At present, Russia is the only country that has recognized the Taliban administration. In contrast, the international community and regional countries have set conditions for the official recognition of the Taliban, including respect for human rights, the establishment of an inclusive government with the participation of ethnic groups and women, the fight against terrorism, and adherence to international commitments; however, the Taliban has not accepted these demands and considers raising such requests as interference in Afghanistan's internal affairs.

Karzai said in another part of the interview that he is still in contact and dialogue with a number of Taliban leaders and discusses the necessity of girls' education and women's return to work during his meetings with them. He added that some Taliban officials he has met understand the importance of this issue and agree with his perspective on it.

Hamid Karzai, the former president of Afghanistan, says that in the current situation, the appropriate time for recognizing the Taliban has not yet arrived. According to him, the legitimacy and international acceptance of the Taliban depend on the fulfillment of a set of conditions, including the reopening of schools and universities to girls and the provision of employment opportunities for women.
