Shooting at White House banquet; Trump: I don't think shooting is related to war with Iran

The event was underway at the Hilton Washington hotel when the shooting occurred at a nearby checkpoint.


After the incident, Trump, speaking to reporters, responded to a question about the potential link between the event and the war in Iran by stating that such a connection seems unlikely; however, he stressed that it is still too early to judge with certainty, and more details will soon become clear.


He also said that based on initial assessments, the assailant acted alone, although investigations are ongoing.


Meanwhile, Jeffrey Carroll, chief of the Metropolitan Washington Police, announced that the suspect was stopped and detained at the checkpoint and is now hospitalized for examination. According to him, the individual has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen, a resident of Torrance, California.


Carroll added that the suspect was a guest at the hotel, and his motive for the action remains unclear.


Following the incident, Trump announced that the dinner has been postponed and will be held at a later date.


The White House Correspondents' Association dinner is an annual event attended by journalists and senior U.S. officials. Trump had not participated in it after returning to the White House previously; however, this year marked his first attendance.


In addition to Trump, high-ranking officials such as JD Vance, Marco Rubio, Pete Hegseth, and Karoline Leavitt were also present at the event.


CBS News has reported that the suspect is a teacher who received the "Teacher of the Month" award in Torrance in 2024. Trump has once again emphasized that initial assessments by officials indicate the individual acted alone.

Following the shooting incident near the venue of the White House Correspondents' Association dinner—an event being held for the first time with Donald Trump's attendance—the gathering was disrupted, and the U.S. President, along with the First Lady, left the premises.
