However, Iran International network has claimed that the real number of victims reaches approximately 12 thousand people.


These statements mark the first time that an official of the Islamic Republic has confirmed a high figure for human casualties resulting from the severe suppression of the nationwide unrest over the past two weeks.


This Iranian official, who did not wish to have their name disclosed, provided no explanation or details regarding the identities of the individuals killed.


The Iran Human Rights Organization has stated that the number of those killed in the protests is at least 648 people, including 9 children among them. The organization has also said that unverified statistics indicate the number of fatalities exceeds six thousand people.


The organization added that government forces, in dealing with the protesters, have used military weapons and, in some cases, have fired at individuals' heads and necks from close range. Widespread and group arrests have also been reported in some cities.


The Iran Human Rights Organization has warned that the continued internet shutdowns, official threats, and judicial proceedings increase the risk of further mass killings and the issuance of multiple death sentences.

An official of the Islamic Republic stated in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday that at least two thousand people have lost their lives during the recent protests in Iran.
