Ebola outbreak in Congo; Death toll nears 500

Health officials say the registered cases have been reported in three eastern provinces of the country, including Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu.


The outbreak of this disease began in mid-May, and since then, Congolese health institutions, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, have expanded the process of testing, treating patients, and tracking individuals who have been in contact with those infected.


Meanwhile, reports indicate that initial trials for some potential drugs to treat the "Bundibugyo" strain of the Ebola virus have also begun in Congo.


Currently, 10 laboratories in the country have the capability to diagnose this type of virus, and three different methods are used to conduct the tests. Nevertheless, infrastructural problems and the security situation have caused delays in receiving test results.


Officials say containing this outbreak faces serious challenges, including weaknesses in the health system, reduced international aid, insecurity, lack of reliable electricity, absence of proper roads, and also distrust among some segments of the population toward the government and international aid organizations.

Officials of the Democratic Republic of Congo have announced that the number of people infected with the Ebola virus in the country has risen to 1,502. According to official statistics, 473 people have so far lost their lives as a result of contracting this disease.
