Natural Disasters; OCHA Says More Than 92,000 Affected in Afghanistan

OCHA has added that floods have caused the most harm to people, with around 88,000 individuals affected by floods and landslides. Eastern Afghanistan, with more than 51,000 people impacted, has suffered the greatest damage, and Nuristan province in this region has seen the most severe effects. Additionally, from June 19 to August 2, nearly 5,000 people in 10 provinces have been affected by natural disasters.


OCHA has identified seasonal rains, rapid snowmelt, environmental degradation, and a lack of adequate infrastructure as factors increasing the risk of flooding, particularly in rural and mountainous areas. In the wake of these events, agricultural lands and crops, roads, water supply networks, irrigation systems, and markets have also been damaged, and many families have lost their homes and possessions.


The agency states that a number of affected families are now living in temporary tents and facing shortages of safe drinking water, lighting, gas, and health services. Women and children are among the most vulnerable groups, and according to OCHA, women in the affected areas of Nuristan lack sufficient access to medical services, sanitation facilities, and clean water.


United Nations humanitarian agencies are providing assistance to those affected in the areas of health, education, food security, shelter, water, and sanitation; however, the destruction of roads and ongoing flooding have made aid delivery difficult. OCHA has emphasized that immediate aid is insufficient for many families, and the reconstruction of homes and restoration of their livelihoods require long-term support. The agency has also stressed the need to establish early warning systems, reduce disaster risks, and enhance preparedness for future events and climate change.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that over the past eight months, more than 92,000 people across all 34 provinces of Afghanistan have been affected by floods and landslides. From January to early August, 97 people have lost their lives and 331 others have been injured. Nearly 10,000 homes have been damaged, and more than 2,100 homes have been completely destroyed.
