Taz Newspaper: Germany seeks to deport Afghan asylum seekers with no criminal record

According to this report, at least five people are awaiting deportation; however, state authorities have not released precise figures on the matter.


Germany had halted the deportation of Afghan citizens following the Taliban's return to power in 2021, but resumed the process in the fall of 2024 solely for individuals convicted of crimes and those deemed a security threat.


Nevertheless, the coalition government's agreement also provides for expanding deportations to individuals without criminal records.


According to taz, Alexander Dobrindt, Germany's interior minister, has reached an agreement with the Taliban in recent weeks regarding the deportation of Afghan citizens and, in exchange, has consented to increasing the number of Taliban diplomats in Germany.


Four of the individuals awaiting deportation are in custody in the state of Bavaria, and one is in Hesse. Additionally, one person who was being held in the Lower Saxony deportation detention center has been released due to an error by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees in notifying an official decision.


The German government has also announced that from January 1, 2025, to June 19, 2025, a total of 87 people have been deported to Afghanistan, with 77 via three chartered flights and 10 via commercial flights.

The German newspaper taz has reported that the German government intends to deport a number of asylum seekers without criminal records to Afghanistan for the first time in several years.
