Famous Syrian actor becomes MP by decree of Ahmed Sharia

In total, 70 final members of Syria's transitional parliament have been directly appointed by the president to pave the way for the first session of this assembly next week. With these appointments, the 210-member transitional parliament is now complete; an assembly in which two-thirds of its members were previously selected through regional elections.


Among the newly appointed members are 15 women and 13 individuals who were political prisoners during the rule of Bashar al-Assad. Muhammad Taha Ahmad, head of the Supreme Elections Committee, described this list as comprising experienced figures, local leaders, and representatives from various segments of society across Syria's 14 governorates.


The formation of the new parliament has also been accompanied by some challenges. Elections in Suwayda province have yet to be held due to last year's sectarian clashes, and the voting process in some northern regions of Syria has faced delays.


At the same time, more than 20 Kurdish parties and 14 Syrian civil society organizations have criticized the manner in which this parliament was formed, viewing the president's appointment of one-third of its members as a factor that undermines the assembly's independence. Nevertheless, the deputy to the UN Special Envoy has emphasized that the parliament's launch holds great importance for enacting new laws and ensuring the participation of all segments of Syrian society in the transitional process.

Syrian television announced that Rozina Ladqani, a well-known actress in the country, has been appointed to the new parliament by decree of Ahmad al-Sharaa, President of Syria. According to officials from the Supreme Elections Committee, these appointments aim to achieve greater balance in the parliament's composition in terms of gender and ethnicity.
