Rabab Fatima officially appointed as UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Afghanistan

She will take over the responsibility of this mission following the end of Rosa Otunbayeva's tenure and will continue UNAMA's activities in Afghanistan.

Rabab Fatima has more than three decades of experience in diplomacy and international cooperation. Prior to this, she served as Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Least Developed Countries and also spent years as Bangladesh's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

This seasoned diplomat has held several other significant responsibilities in her career, including chairing the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission, becoming the first woman to hold that position. She has also served as Bangladesh's Ambassador to Japan and as Regional Representative for the International Organization for Migration, and she holds a Master's degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from Tufts University in the United States.

The appointment of Rabab Fatima comes at a time when the United Nations Security Council has recently extended the UNAMA mission for another year. This resolution was adopted with the support of all Security Council members and ensures the continuation of this body's activities in political, diplomatic, and humanitarian fields in Afghanistan.

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, has appointed Rabab Fatima, a senior Bangladeshi diplomat, as the new head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and his Special Representative in the country.
