UN Secretary-General calls for immediate lifting of Taliban restrictions on women

Guterres stated that these restrictions violate the fundamental rights of women and girls and contradict international laws and the UN Charter. According to him, the continuation of this situation also makes economic development, stability, and Afghanistan’s return to the global community more difficult.


The UN Secretary-General added that the presence of female staff is of great importance for providing humanitarian aid and essential services to the people, especially women and girls, and their absence creates problems in accessing these services.


Guterres has asked the Taliban to allow women to be present in UN offices across Afghanistan without hindrance and with security. He has also called for an end to the widespread restrictions against women and girls and for creating the conditions for their full and equal participation in society.


The Taliban banned Afghan women from working in UN offices in Hamal 1402; a decision that faced widespread domestic and international reactions but has not been lifted to date. As the first anniversary of this ban approaches, sources say UN offices have asked staff to work from home for five days.



Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, has criticized the Taliban’s policies toward women and girls in Afghanistan and called for the immediate lifting of the ban on Afghan women working and serving in the offices of this organization.
