Chinese workers and companies targeted in terrorist attack on Afghanistan-Tajikistan border

According to Tajik and Chinese officials, more than twelve people were killed in this incident, including Chinese citizens among the victims. These individuals had been engaged in work activities in remote and mountainous areas of Tajikistan.


The State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan has announced that "three members of a terrorist group" had entered Tajikistan from Afghan soil a few days prior. According to this agency, the attackers were identified the next morning and clashed with Tajik border forces, resulting in the deaths of five people, including all three assailants.


Based on reports from Tajik officials, this attack was organized from Afghanistan's Badakhshan Province and marks the third such incident in the past month that has led to the deaths of Tajik security forces.


Tajik officials have described this event as "a clear example of the Taliban's inability to prevent terrorist groups from operating in border areas" and have urged the Taliban to take serious responsibility for securing the shared border and preventing the recurrence of such attacks.


Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in Dushanbe has issued a security alert urging Chinese nationals and companies to leave the border regions and has requested that the Tajik government take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and interests in the country.


Since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, Tajikistan has repeatedly warned of insecurity along the shared border between the two countries—a border approximately 1,340 kilometers long that, according to Tajik officials, remains under threat from armed groups.

Al Jazeera has reported that following a terrorist attack near the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border, a number of Chinese companies and workers were targeted.
