Salang Highway temporarily closed due to flooding and heavy rainfall

The spokesperson for the Taliban's Ministry of Public Works announced that due to flooding in the northern Salang, traffic on this highway has been halted until further notice.


Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas stated in a press release on Friday, May 21, that in addition to the Salang Highway, the Takhar-Badakhshan route in the Qara Kamar area has also been closed due to flooding.


He further added that recent rains have led to the blockage of several roads in the provinces of Panjshir, Samangan, Baghlan, Kunduz, Paktia, and Nuristan; however, some of these routes have been reopened to traffic.


According to this Taliban official, Salang maintenance and protection forces are currently engaged in clearing the routes and reopening the roads. He urged drivers and travelers to refrain from using these routes until an official announcement is made.


In recent days, heavy rains and flooding in several provinces of Afghanistan have also resulted in financial damages and human casualties. The Taliban's Disaster Management Agency announced that in just one day and night, rain, flooding, and lightning claimed the lives of six people and injured 17 others.

Heavy rains and flooding have caused the temporary closure of the Salang Highway and several major routes in northern Afghanistan.
