European Parliament Deputy: Supporting the Taliban's Democratic Opposition is the Only Option

This reaction came after Ahmad Massoud, in a message on the social network X on Saturday (May 22), expressed appreciation for the positions of several European Parliament members in opposing the normalization of relations with the Taliban. He wrote that Europe must stand alongside the freedom-loving people of Afghanistan, not alongside the "terrorists and oppressors" who suppress the people.


The leader of the National Resistance Front also stressed that values such as human rights, democracy, human dignity, and the rule of law must not be sacrificed for political expediency or appeasement of the Taliban.


In response to this message, Pina Picierno wrote that Ahmad Massoud represents "another Afghanistan"—an Afghanistan that, in her words, stands in complete opposition to the Taliban regime. She added that the existence of such a movement exposes the crimes, violence, and human rights violations that, in her view, form the foundations of Taliban rule.


The European Parliament Vice President also stated that highlighting the voice of Taliban opponents serves as a reminder to Europe and the world that normalizing relations with the Taliban is not the only option available. She emphasized that the choice between supporting a democratic opposition and aligning with a regime that, in her words, commits "crimes against humanity" against its own people is entirely clear.


Addressing Ahmad Massoud directly, Picierno wrote that she will strive to ensure this choice is not overlooked and added that the European Parliament will remain a "resolute and loyal ally" in the Afghan people's struggle for freedom.


These stances come as the European Commission has confirmed it is coordinating with Swedish authorities to plan technical meetings with a Taliban delegation in Brussels. If held, these meetings would mark the first time since the fall of Kabul in August 2021 that the European Union has formally hosted Taliban officials.


The Taliban has so far shown no official reaction to these meetings or the criticisms raised.

Pina Picierno, Vice President of the European Parliament, by reposting a message from Ahmad Massoud, leader of the National Resistance Front, has stated that there is no way forward except for shoulder-to-shoulder cooperation with the "democratic opposition" to the Taliban and representatives of Afghan women. She emphasized that amplifying and reflecting the voice of Taliban opponents is a "moral imperative."
