Taiwan dispute could push US and China into nuclear confrontation

The report states that countries in the region are expanding their nuclear and military capabilities, and this trend threatens strategic stability. According to this think tank, the lack of clear understanding between Washington and Beijing regarding the rules of engagement has heightened the risk of escalating tensions.

This report was released on the eve of the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore, a forum where high-ranking defense and security officials from various countries are set to discuss regional challenges. The Iran war, Taiwan tensions, and the extent of U.S. commitment to its allies will be among the main topics of this summit.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly threatened to use force if necessary to annex the island. Xi Jinping also warned during his recent meeting with Donald Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could bring relations between the two countries to a "very dangerous" stage.

Based on this assessment, in the event of a conflict, China will seek to keep the United States and its allies out of the region, while Washington will focus on strengthening Taiwan's defensive capabilities. The think tank has also warned that attacks on the command and control systems of both sides could increase the risk of the war expanding.

The latest report from the International Institute for Strategic Studies, published by Reuters, warns that any conflict between the United States and China over Taiwan could escalate the crisis to the level of nuclear confrontation. This think tank states that the world has entered a new phase of nuclear arms competition, with the Asia-Pacific region at its center.
