Emmanuel Macron arrives in Syria

Reuters news agency has described this trip as a sign of Syria's shifting position in regional and international equations. Ahmad al-Sharaa, who now serves as President of Syria, is working to expand relations with Western countries and regional governments to lay the groundwork for rebuilding a nation ravaged by 13 years of war.


Upon arriving in Damascus, Macron emphasized France's support for the Syrian people on the social network X, calling for the emergence of an independent, unified, diverse Syria at peace with its neighbors. He was welcomed at Damascus airport by Asaad al-Shibani, Syria's Foreign Minister, and is scheduled to meet and hold talks with Ahmad al-Sharaa and other officials of the country.


Syria's reconstruction is one of the key focuses of this trip, with a number of senior executives from major French companies, including TotalEnergies and the container shipping firm CMA CGM, accompanying Macron. The Élysée Palace has also announced that the French President will emphasize support for a free, pluralistic Syria that respects all ethnicities and faiths.


Ahmad al-Sharaa, following the end of the decades-long rule of the Assad family, has pledged to establish an inclusive system; however, Syria continues to face sectarian tensions and conflicts. Meanwhile, French officials have stressed that cooperation with Damascus is contingent on full adherence to the principle of pluralism. Macron has previously been a leading advocate for easing Western sanctions against Syria, and Ahmad al-Sharaa met with him in France last year during his first European trip after Assad's fall.

Emmanuel Macron, President of France, arrived in Damascus on Monday, June 4. This marks the first visit by a leader from a European Union member state to Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime and the rise to power of a government led by Ahmad al-Sharaa.
