Doctors Without Borders reports on one of its women in Herat

According to the report, the doctor’s husband was accompanying her. She was held for two days for failing to adhere to the mandatory dress code imposed on women and was finally released on June 8 after she, her husband, and other family members signed a written undertaking pledging to comply with a specific type of attire prescribed by the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in the future.


In a statement, MSF expressed deep anger and concern over the arrest and imprisonment of one of its staff members in connection with the enforcement of dress code regulations for women in the city.


The statement continued that this incident is not an isolated case. Women in Afghanistan currently face severe restrictions on their freedom of movement and public presence; restrictions that have direct consequences on people’s access to healthcare services and the delivery of health services across the country.


The statement concluded by noting that female staff form a fundamental part of MSF’s operations in Afghanistan. According to figures, women make up 45 percent of the nurses employed by the organization.


Finally, it emphasized that the presence of female staff in the organization is absolutely essential, particularly in projects related to maternal care and women’s health.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported that one of its female staff members was detained on June 6 by individuals from the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice while heading to Herat Regional Hospital, where she worked in the pediatric department supported by the organization.
