Mohammad Mohaqiq: We officially recognize the Durand Line

Mohaqeq said in an interview with Amu TV on Sunday, April 19: "One of the points of contention between the Taliban and Pakistan is the Durand Line." He added that the Taliban consider about 35 percent of Pakistan's territory as belonging to Afghanistan.


The leader of the Unity Party likened Afghanistan's current geography to a mulberry leaf and said he accepts the country to that extent. He also pointed out that the Durand Line agreement was signed during the time of Amir Abdul Rahman Khan and is now recognized by the United Nations and countries around the world.


Mohaqeq clarified that those who intend to reopen the dispute over the border with Pakistan should assess their own strength and power. He described Pakistan as a nuclear power and stressed that he is not in favor of continuing these disputes.


This political leader added that he had previously discussed the Durand Line with former President Hamid Karzai, and in an official meeting attended by many officials at the time, he had told Karzai that not accepting this border is not in Afghanistan's interest.


The Durand Line agreement was signed in 1893 AD between Afghanistan and British India and is known by the name of one of the signatories, Henry Mortimer Durand. To date, various Afghan governments and the Taliban have not accepted this line as the official border, although Pakistan has sought its recognition in negotiations.


Mohaqeq concluded by emphasizing that there is disagreement among Afghan politicians regarding the Durand Line; however, his personal view has always been clear and transparent.

Mohammad Mohaqeq, leader of the Islamic Unity Party of the People of Afghanistan and member of the Supreme Council of Resistance, announced that he accepts the Durand Line as the official border between Afghanistan and Pakistan and emphasized his commitment to the United Nations' division in Afghanistan's political geography.
