Ukraine reports new attacks on Russian energy infrastructure

Kyiv considers these attacks part of its strategy to strike at infrastructure that, according to Ukrainian officials, plays a role in funding Russia's war and supporting its military operations.

Meanwhile, the state-owned Rosatom announced that a Ukrainian drone had struck the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe's largest nuclear power plant. According to the company, the attack did not damage the main equipment; however, it caused damage to one of the plant's buildings.

Alexey Likhachev, head of Rosatom, described the incident as a deliberate act and said the drone explosion had created a hole in the wall of one of the turbine halls. Rosatom also announced that a kamikaze drone had struck the turbine hall of Unit No. 6 at the plant.

The International Atomic Energy Agency, expressing concern over the incident, announced that it has requested access to the damaged site for a direct assessment of the situation. This power plant, which has been under Russian control since 2022, has repeatedly been targeted in reciprocal attacks, heightening concerns about the potential for a nuclear incident.

The Ukrainian army has announced that in its latest attacks, it has targeted several Russian energy facilities. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said on Sunday that drones from the country had struck the Saratov oil refinery in southwestern Russia, resulting in a large-scale fire.
