OCHA: More than four million people in Afghanistan need shelter

OCHA, in a statement posted on Sunday (19 Dalwa) on the social network X, said that relief organizations plan to provide shelter and non-food item assistance to 881,000 affected individuals in the year 2026 AD; however, approximately $160.3 million is needed for this aid delivery.


OCHA has warned that if the required financial resources are not secured, hundreds of thousands of Afghan citizens will face serious humanitarian threats in the coming winter.


The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has written that multidimensional humanitarian crises in Afghanistan, exacerbated by natural events, economic pressures, social inequalities, and political factors, have increased people's vulnerability and dramatically heightened the need for shelter.


This United Nations-affiliated entity has emphasized that female-headed households, internally displaced persons, and returnees are at greater risk than others.


OCHA wrote in this report that in 2025 alone, more than 15,000 people were affected by floods and heavy rains, with about 90 percent of them still living in tents or damaged and unsafe homes.


According to this report, more than four million people have returned to the country, with nearly one-quarter of them considering shelter their greatest need.


Based on United Nations assessments, despite a reduction in informal settlement sites over the past two years, around 390,000 families are still living in nearly 900 informal sites.


It is worth noting that in the past solar year, Afghanistan witnessed deadly natural events that led to the deaths of thousands, widespread destruction of homes, and the homelessness of a large number of families.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says that with the increase in natural events, economic problems, and the forced return of migrants, around 4.2 million people in Afghanistan will need emergency shelter assistance in 2026.
