Iran invites National Resistance Front member to attend Islamic Awakening meeting

Hesam, who serves as the head of the Ulama Council of the National Resistance Front led by Ahmad Massoud, previously held the position of head of the Assembly of Afghan Ulama before the fall of the republic and now resides in Iran. Salehi is also a member of the Council of Shia Ulama of Afghanistan and director of the Resalat Seminary in Kabul.


Iranian media have reported that the issue of Palestine, recent developments in Iran-supported movements in the Middle East, and ways to support Palestinians were among the main topics of this meeting. Representatives from more than 20 countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Russia, Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain, and Indonesia, participated in the program.


The invitation of a leadership member of the National Resistance Front to this meeting comes at a time when Tehran is simultaneously maintaining its political, economic, and diplomatic relations with the Taliban. Iranian officials and the Taliban have held numerous meetings and trips in recent years; however, the Islamic Republic has not yet officially recognized the Taliban administration. In the month of Cancer (July) as well, Iran had invited Ahmad Massoud, leader of the National Resistance Front, and Mohammad Mohaqeq, leader of the Islamic Unity Party of the People of Afghanistan, to Tehran to participate in the farewell and funeral ceremonies for Ali Khamenei; ceremonies in which a Taliban delegation led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and including Amir Khan Muttaqi was also present.


At that ceremony, the program host referred to Ahmad Massoud and his companions as the "Supreme Resistance Delegation of Afghanistan." This presence marked the first official and public participation of Taliban opposition leaders in an Iranian governmental ceremony in the past five years, eliciting reactions from Taliban officials and supporters. Khairullah Shinwari, a Taliban Foreign Ministry official, had stated that Iran had hosted individuals who "challenge Afghanistan's national sovereignty and independence." Some Taliban supporters also described Iran's invitation and hosting of opponents of the group as "hostility" and "betrayal."


The presence of a National Resistance Front representative at the Islamic Awakening meeting in Tehran, overall, indicates that Iran, while maintaining its relations with the Taliban, continues to keep channels of communication open with some opponents of the group. This approach persists even as Tehran expands its official interactions with the Taliban on one hand and, on the other, provides opportunities for participation to figures opposing the group in its official programs.



The Islamic Republic of Iran, continuing its engagements with Afghan political factions, has invited Molavi Habibullah Hesam, a member of the leadership of the National Resistance Front, and Jawad Salehi, a member of the Council of Shia Ulama of Afghanistan, to participate in the meeting of the Supreme Council of the World Assembly for the Awakening of Islam in Tehran. This meeting, held on Friday, the sixth of Virgon (September), under the title "The Issue of Palestine in the Thought of the Martyred Imam of the Ummah," was attended, according to Iran's Fars News Agency, by 27 foreign guests from Afghanistan and other countries.
