Taliban announce return of more than 2,000 Afghan refugees from Iran and Pakistan in one day

According to information from this ministry, during this period, 450 families—totaling more than two thousand individuals—entered Afghanistan through key border crossings. These families returned to the country via the Spin Boldak route in Kandahar province, Torkham in Nangarhar, Islam Qala in Herat, and the Abrisham port in Nimroz.


Based on the figures provided, the largest number of returnees entered via the Torkham route, while dozens of other families crossed through the Spin Boldak, Islam Qala, and Abrisham port crossings.


The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriates also stated that cash assistance has been distributed to some of these families to help alleviate their initial hardships.


These returns are taking place amid ongoing reports of a concerning situation for Afghan migrants in Iran and Pakistan.


Local sources report continued pressures, mandatory inspections, and even detentions and deportations of Afghan migrants in some cities in Pakistan—a trend that has intensified in recent years.


Meanwhile, the Taliban's Ministry of Refugees and Repatriates has announced that more than 240,000 Afghan migrants returned to the country from Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey in just the past month. According to this ministry's information, the largest number of these individuals came from Iran and Pakistan, with a small number returning from Turkey.


This unprecedented surge in migrant returns is occurring even as many of these families face serious economic challenges, a lack of shelter, and no job opportunities inside the country—an issue that demands urgent attention from domestic institutions and assistance from international organizations.
