US federal judge orders force-feeding of Rahmanullah Lucknowal

According to court documents, Laknawala has been on a hunger strike in protest of his detention conditions for several months now, and in some instances has even refused to drink water. As this situation has persisted, concerns about his health have grown.


Amit Mehta, a U.S. federal judge, stated in his ruling that the purpose of the forced feeding and treatment is to preserve Laknawala's life and prevent any further deterioration of his physical condition. This order remains in effect until October 28 and will be enforceable until such time as Laknawala resumes consuming food and liquids voluntarily, accepts medical treatment, and is no longer at risk of life-threatening harm.


The U.S. Department of Justice had previously announced that Laknawala was transferred to a hospital on July 9 due to the worsening of his physical condition resulting from the hunger strike. U.S. officials have said that he had abstained from eating food since June, and continuing this situation could have endangered his life.


Laknawala faces heavy federal charges in a separate case. U.S. prosecutors say that last November, in the vicinity of the White House, he carried out an armed attack that killed Sarah Bextrom, a member of the U.S. National Guard, and severely wounded Andrew Wolf, another member of the force.


Prosecutors have also charged Laknawala with attempting to kill two other service members who had arrived at the scene to subdue him following the incident.


Laknawala has denied all the charges brought against him and proclaimed his innocence. In total, he faces more than 10 federal charges, including murder, attempted murder, and crimes related to the use of firearms.


In the meantime, the U.S. Department of Justice is examining whether to seek the death penalty in Laknawala's case.
