Sources: A journalist was released from Taliban prison after nearly two years

Taliban agents arrested Aref Hejran and Ahmad Kamran on 16 Saratan 1403 in the Khairkhana area of Kabul. The Taliban’s military court also, on 27 Senbula of the same year, sentenced both journalists to 10 years in prison on charges raised by the group.

The Taliban had accused Aref Hejran of taking photos of checkpoints and forces of the group and sending the images to a publication outside Afghanistan. Despite the issuance of a 10-year prison sentence, he has been released after serving about two years in prison.

Hejran, born in Panjshir and resident of Kabul, was a member of the Afghanistan Journalists Union and responsible for the weekly “Haftkhwan.” Before his arrest, he had collaborated with the weekly “Panjereh” and several other Afghan media outlets.

Organizations defending media freedom had previously condemned the arrest and sentencing of Aref Hejran and demanded his release. No further details have been published about the reason for his release after nearly two years of imprisonment.

Mohammad Aref Hejran, an experienced Afghan journalist, was released on Friday, 30 Asad, after nearly two years of imprisonment in a Taliban prison. Reliable sources say that the Taliban’s military court had previously sentenced him and another journalist to 10 years in prison each.
